De Tilburgse LocHal is afgelopen vrijdag tijdens het World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam uitgeroepen tot ‘World Building of the Year’. Het gebouw, dat bestemd leek voor de sloop, is volgens de jury getransformeerd tot een ruimte waar verschillende gebruikers elkaar ontmoeten voor uiteenlopende doeleinden.
De LocHal in de Tilburgse Spoorzone werd ontworpen door Civic Architects, Braaksma & Roos Architectenbureau en Petra Blaisse. Het gebouw biedt onderdak aan de Tilburgse hoofdvestiging van Bibliotheek Midden-Brabant, een vestiging van Seats2meet, een stadscafé en Kunstloc Brabant.
Overall winner
Het ontwerp werd op 6 december tijdens het World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Amsterdam door een panel van bijna 150 architecten, ontwerpers en academici uitgeroepen tot ‘overall winner’. En daarmee tot het beste gebouw van de wereld. Twee dagen eerder, tijdens hetzelfde evenement, was het ook al uitgeroepen tot winnaar in de categorie ‘Completed buildings – culture’.
Juryrapport
De jury stelt bij wijze van toelichting over de toekenning van de prijs aan de LocHal: ‘This project transformed a significant building which had been planned for demolition. The result has created a physical facility in which a variety of users can meet for a variety of purposes, in this sense the building has become a social condenser. It celebrates and exploits local traditions of textile manufacture and it has an environmental strategy aimed at heating and cooling people, not the building. It provides spaces of very different scales to provide both communal and more intimate uses.’
‘Sustainable approach’
Met betrekking tot het winnen van de prijs in de categorie ‘Completed buildings – culture’ spreekt de jury over een ‘strong, sustainable approach to convert a former industrial facility into a civic building. It takes on the potential of the big void and turns it into the marvellous, heroic central space of the library. The fine details and the use of textiles create the necessary intimacy for the human scale, while putting in value of the old steel structure.’
Prestigieuze prijs
‘Het is een heel prestigieuze prijs. Deze hoort op wereldschaal bij de drie grootste awards. Er waren duizend inzendingen voor deze titel,’ aldus een woordvoerder van de LocHal tegenover Omroep Brabant.
